The Two Main Types of Pallets and How to Use Them

In a previous article, we’ve discussed the key differences that pallet and parcel shipping have from each other. But what is a pallet, and how do they work?

Today, we at PRECISE LOGISTICS FREIGHT, a reliable provider of professional freight carrier services in Chicago, Illinois, are going to be discussing the two main types of pallets and how you can use them to complete business deliveries.

What is Pallet?
A pallet is a flat structure made out of plastic, composite, wood, or metal, on which freight is secure for shipping. It has both a top and a bottom deck to ensure sturdiness, and its raised construction allows the forks forklift or a pallet jack to slide under the pallet in order to move it.

The Two Main Types of Pallets

  • Stringer Pallets
  • Block (Deck Board) Pallets

Stringer pallets have three parallel pieces of wood used to support other boards of wood that make up the whole structure. Also called 2-way pallets, stringer pallets can only be picked up by a forklift or a pallet jack from two different sides.

A block pallet, on the other hand, is called 4-way pallets and can be picked up from all sides. Blocks of wood on the middle of each edge and on the sides provide more support from the platform compared to a stringer pallet, which makes this type suitable for heavier shipments.

The technicalities of the Logistics Industry can be a little tricky, especially for beginners.

Should you need any help with freight shipping in Illinois, we would be more than happy to lend you a hand. We can provide you with services from temp controlled freight to expedite freight solutions.
